Stay Woke: Consciously Sporting Style

A couple of months ago, my fiancé and I went to see B.O.B. live at The New Daisy Theater on Beale Street. It was an energetic yet an intimate show due The New Daisy’s size. B.O.B. was mingling in the crowd as he recited his lyrics to many songs that I enjoy.

After the show, of course there was merchandise available for purchase and I had to have this tee! This “Been Woke Stay Woke” shirt was only offered in men’s sizes but I got it anyway. I figured that I could do some simple alterations to fit my style and silhouette so I got a size small.

Since the Beyonce’s “Formation” video release and Jesse Williams BET Awards speech has triggered many to become awake and think about our culture and history a bit more consciously, I felt it was prime time to get this top out of the closet and sport this look.

In order to achieve this fitted tee look, I laid the mens shirt down flat and placed one of my favorite fitted t-shirts on top of it. I took my rotary cutter and “traced” the fitted tee allowing about 1/2 inch seam allowance from the sleeve opening down to the waist. I pinned the seams and used a triple straight stitch to allow some stretching.

I decided to do a sporty look with the tee so I paired it with a pair of grey cropped joggers and black and white running shoes. I also made a pair of leather Eye of Ra earrings to wear with this top, otherwise, the look felt incomplete.
